Identification Locations - Transmissions
When you need a transmission, or transmission overhaul kit,
we may ask for model and
serial numbers off of the transmission tag. This
information is needed due to variations in the types of
transmissions used, specific component updates, or serial number related engineering changes that have
transpired over years of production.
Even when your request does not involve the engine, there
are times that you will be asked for the brand and type of
engine. This question is not
only for proper engine identification, but sometimes
necessary for transmission and torque converter
identification as well.
Borg
Warner – Transmission tag will be located on top of the
converter housing or on a machined block on the side of the
transmission. Examples: 1016-000-051 or 1021-000-028 or
1008-052, etc.
Carraro Transmissions – Transmission tag will be
located on the filter side of the transmission near the
bottom. Note - Some OEM applications have a bar code
sticker applied to the bottom of the tag. The customer needs
to peel this bar code sticker back to reveal the actual OEM
part numbers stamped on the tag. Carraro transmissions are
commonly found in Case, New Holland, Volvo and Komatsu
backhoe loaders and a wide variety of Telehandlers such as
Pettibone and Gehl.
Case Transmissions – Transmission tag location will
vary depending on transmission manufacturer. Possible
locations: on top of the converter housing / on the filter
side of the transmission near the bottom / on a machined
block on the side of the transmission. Case commonly used
B/W 1001’s, 1016’s, Carraro TLB1’s in backhoe loaders and
Clark Hurth (Dana Spicer) or ZF’s in larger equipment.
Caterpillar CE – Transmission tag locations will vary
depending on transmission or transaxle manufacturer and type
of equipment. Possible locations: on top of the converter
housing / on the side near the bottom of the transmission
(on the opposite side of the transfer case if it’s a 4WD
unit) / at the rear of the transmission in the lower left
hand corner / on the top of the transaxle near the control
valve. Note – some transmissions have no tags on them
or may have group number rather than an actual transmission
assembly number.
Clark Forklift Transmissions – Transmission tag
locations will vary depending on transmission. Newer models
will be located near the top of the converter housing.
Clark Hurth (Dana Spicer) Transmissions –
Transmission tag will be located at the rear of the
transmission in the lower left hand corner. Some OEM’s put
their tag on the right.
Daewoo/Doosan – Transmission tag locations will vary
depending on whether it’s a transmission or transaxle.
Possible locations: on top of the converter housing / on the
top of the transaxle near the control valve.
Hyster Transmissions – Transmission part number will
be stamped into the top of the transmission case near the
control valve or will be on a small metal tag attached to
the top edge of the transmission case near the control
valve. Numbers will be like T50Mxxxxx, T82Mxxxxx, T90Mxxxxx,
designating the transmission model and the unit serial
number.
JCB / ITL(International Transmissions Limited) –
Transmission tag will be located on the rear of the
transmission in lower left hand corner of the main case.
Komatsu – Transmission tag will be located on top of
the converter housing.
Mitsubishi – No transmission tag
Nissan – No transmission tag
TCM – Transmission tag will be located on top of the
converter housing.
Toyota – Transmission tag will be located on top of
the converter housing.
Yale Transmissions - Transmission part number will be
stamped into the top of the transmission case near the
control valve or it will have a small metal tag attached to
the top edge of the transmission case near the control
valve. Note -many Yale transmissions have no tags or
identification numbers on them. Later models from the mid
90’s forward will have the same "T" number system as the
Hyster transmissions.
