In last month’s newsletter you’ll recall that we provided information that would aid you in identifying industrial transmissions and engines. This month, we want to provide you with the information and guidance you’ll need to identify your industrial torque converters.

As you probably know, there are many styles, types and brands of industrial torque converters and most of these are noticeably different from one another. However, some of them are almost identical with subtle differences that can go undetected.

An incorrect torque converter can cost you a lot of time and money if you purchase the wrong one. A damaged, faulty or contaminated torque converter can cause a lot of additional time, money and duplication of work if it goes unchecked and causes damage. Even worse, because it shares the same oil as the transmission, it can also contaminate your transmission and invalidate your warranties. For these reasons, Joseph Industries encourages you to replace your torque converter each time you perform transmission or engine work.

There are two main types of industrial torque converters - steel welded and bolted. Welded converters are the most common type. The body of welded converter is completely sealed as a one piece "non-serviceable" unit. However, a bolted converter can be taken apart for servicing. In either case, proper identification is important to ensure correct servicing and replacement.

We prepared a torque converter identification reference to help give you a clear picture of which industrial torque converter you have. These instructions will enable you to save time on the quoting process by ensuring you collect the right information prior to requesting a quote from Joseph Industries. Having all the information allows us to promptly assist you with pricing and availability.

The torque converter links your transmission and engine together. Don’t let it be your weakest link. Joseph Industries torque converters keep that from happening.

Joseph Tech Tip:
When re-installing engines and automatic transmissions, continuously check the torque converter while you are drawing the transmission and engine together to assure it is moving freely. If the torque converter binds, it indicates that there is an installation error. The error needs to be diagnosed and corrected before completing the re-installation. This will prevent damage to the torque converter, transmission pump or stator support shaft.
