How can I tell if my "inching" or "declutch" is adjusted properly?
The only sure way to be positive that the inching or "declutch" function is completely engaging or disengaging the clutch packs is by the use of a pressure gauge. When properly adjusted, there will be NO pressure to the clutch packs when system is actuated fully. When the system is deactivated, there will be full regulated pressure to the clutch packs. Depending on the style of the transmission, this pressure will be same as mainline pressure or near to mainline pressure. Improper inching adjustment will cause clutches to overheat by slipping, "glaze" the friction material, warp the separator plates, and cause premature clutch failure. Incorrect inching adjustment or improper use of the inching feature are probably the two most prevalent causes of clutch pack failures. A little extra time spent assuring these adjustments are done correctly and educating the customer on the proper use of the inching feature will save you and the customer a great deal of money as well as downtime.
