Customer calls complaining that his transmission is slipping. They took pressure readings and torque converter pressure is low. Should I replace the torque converter?
Although it is recommended to install a new or remanufactured torque converter anytime the transmission is disassembled for repair or rebuild, in this case, the torque converter is probably not faulty. A torque converter DOES NOT CREATE PRESSURE. The torque converter acts as a fluid coupling and torque multiplier by reacting to the fluid pumped through it from the charging pump as is dictated by the converter pressure regulating valve. The torque converter must remain full of fluid or "charged" to be able to work. If the converter pressure is low, look for low fluid, a faulty charging pump or pressure regulating valve. The converter is usually the first component that reacts to the signs of fluid starvation.
