My pump pressure is low and my transmission seems to be slipping, should I replace the charge pump?
Although low charge pump pressure is a good indication that a charge pump may be failing, there are several other things to be considered before jumping to that conclusion. The first thing to remember is that a pump creates FLOW. Resistance to that flow by a regulating valve and spring creates PRESSURE. In order to have this flow and pressure, you must first have an adequate supply of the appropriate fluid and a means to create the needed resistance. Before condemning a pump, ask yourself the following:
1. Does it have oil?
2. Is it getting oil?
3. Is the pressure spring broken?
Sometimes getting back to basics will show you not only the failure but also the cause of the failure.
